Modern Memoir: Your Memorable Story

“The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to chisel away the superfluous material.”
― Michelangelo
Writing our stories can seem daunting. And sometimes, it takes a community to get us to sit down and let our experiences flow from within us. Yet once we do, the healing properties of writing anything, let alone our memoir, are unlimited.
Have you ever worried something to “death,” thoughts rolling through your mind when you could be sleeping soundly? Letting those thoughts “escape” through your voice, your words, is the most exhilarating release. You don’t need to keep them going, inside yourself. It can make you unhealthy and sometimes even sick. Some people precipitate illness that eventually kills them just because they kept everything locked up tight inside them. Don’t be one of those people. I implore you.
Most people might not believe they have a story that is worth telling. And every person has a different version of their life; even siblings will vary on their family history. It’s inevitable. What is vital here is that we do tell our stories and that we share our history with one another; that’s how others learn from us, whether we are cognizant of that happening or not. We can always learn from others. If we are open to that.
And readers love to know how others live their lives! It’s kind of like we are all voyeurs of life. We want to know what happens next and then next and then …next. It’s as though we are all seeking answers to life and everyone has their own version of what they see, smell, hear, whisper and touch.
We learn from everyone; everyone is a teacher and can teach us something. Even if it’s only one thing, it can change our lives, the way we think and believe. How wonderful it is, to be witnessed by our friends and our family!
Initially I was drawn to storytelling for change because of the power of stories—and how they empower and heal us. I want to help you to heal, through your stories, whether it be in work, play or any other self-growth areas you are seeking to heal.
